Obtaining Permission

Fintel Library assumes responsibility to obtain copyright permissions for Course Reserves requests.

However, faculty and students may need to request permission from a copyright owner in order to make copies for classroom, publishing or other uses.  Faculty may pass on to students any fees for copies which the copyright owner may assess.

To obtain permission for photocopies:

  1. consult The Copyright Clearance Center which has the right to grant permission and collect fees for photocopying rights for certain publications.

  2. or write directly to the publisher for permission. For smoother processing, allow plenty of lead time.

Include this information:

  • Title, author and/or editor, and edition of materials to be duplicated

  • Exact material to be used, giving amount, page numbers, chapters and, if possible, a photocopy of the material

  • Number of copies to be made

  • Use to be made of duplicated materials

  • Form of distribution (classroom, newsletter, etc.)

  • Whether or not the material is to be sold

  • Type of reprint (ditto, photography, offset, typeset)

Send the request to:

· The permissions department of the publisher along with a self-addressed return envelope.

· When you cannot locate the publisher's address in the publication, consult a research librarian by phone 375-2295 or email Piper Cumbo
