Paraphrasing and Direct Quotations

In-Text Citations

APA Style uses paranthetical, author-date citations. After a quote, add parentheses containing the author's name, the year or publication, and the page number of the work.

Example: "Beauty without grace is the hook without the bait" (Emerson, 1860, pp31-32).

If you use more than one work by the same author, use the letters a, b, etc., after the year.

Example: "Beauty without grace is the hook without the bait" (Emerson, 1860a, pp31-32).

If more than one author has the same last name, add their first initial.

Example: "Beauty without grace is the hook without the bait" (R. Emerson, 1860, pp31-32).
